Consistency is the ability to perform skills / movements correctly over and over again. Consistency is key for an effective performance.

Examples of Impacts on Performance

  • Performing a skill/technique consistently well will increase your chances of success. Some examples of this include:
    • A hockey player who consistently plays effective passes will ensure his team keeps possession of the ball. The impacts this could have on performance include:

      • The player is less likely to give away possession of the ball. This means they are less likely to cause their teams attack to break down resulting in a lost chance to score. This also means that the opponents are less likely to get a chance to counter attack and put the team under threat of losing a goal.

      • The opponents have less possession of the ball and as a result have fewer opportunities to attack and therefore are less likely to create scoring chances.

      • Maintaining possession will give the team opportunities to look for a through ball or on opportunity to create an effective scoring chance. It will ensure the team has time to look for best way to attack and therefore they are more likely to create good scoring chances.

      • Through consistently maintaining possession of the ball the other team may get tired as they are having to chase the ball in order to try and get possession back. This may result in them tiring towards the end of the match and not being able to get back to defend attacks. This may result in space being available that our team can exploit in order to create chances to score.

    • A football striker who consistently marks his opponent closely will ensure that it is difficult for his opponent to find space to receive a pass. The impacts this could have on performance include:

      • As the player struggles to find space to receive a pass it will mean that when his team have possession of the ball the player in possession has fewer passing options. This will put him under pressure and may result in him delaying on the ball and allowing a player to tackle him and regain possession. A further impact in this situation is that due to the lack of passing option the player on the ball is under pressure. This may cause them to make a bad decision such as passing to a marked player or trying to beat a defender which in turn could result in them losing the ball.

      • As the player is struggling to get possession of the ball they don't have the chance to put our team under pressure through getting the ball and running at the defender. This is helping to reduce the amount of pressure the defence is under and reduce the scoring chances the opponents have.

      • The attacker may start to get frustrated do to their inability to get into the game because they are consistently getting marked. This could result in them:

      • Losing their motivation and stop looking for space to get in possession of the ball. This will make the defenders job of marking even easier as they will not make as many runs to try and find space.

      • Lashing out at the defender such as putting in a bad tackle. This may result in free kicks being given against their team which will result in the other team regaining possession and pressure being taken off of the defence. There may also be a risk of them getting into disciplinary problems such as being booked or sent off.

  • Being able to perform skills consistently well will allow you to keep an opponent under pressure without letting them recover. For example being able to play overhead clears consistently to the back of the court will force your opponent right to the back of the court and keep them under pressure. This may result in:

    • Their opponent playing a weak shot to the centre of the court so that they can play a smash in order to win the point.

    • Space being created at the front of their opponents court. This space could be exploited in order to win a point by playing a drop shot.

    • Their opponent tiring as they constantly have to move from the back of the court to base position and back again. This fatigue could lead to weaker shots later in the game that will give the player an easier opportunity to score the point or they may make errors.

  • Performing consistently will increase your own confidence and the confidence teammates have in you. E.g. When a player who consistently plays effective crosses has the ball his team mates will make runs into the box.

  • Performing with consistent technique will help you in a pressurised situation. E.g. A golfer whose technique is consistent is more likely to use the same effective technique on the 18th hole whilst under pressure and play a successful drive.
