Communication is your ability to share clear and concise information with others. Communication is a two way street. When communicating with others there are at least two people involved, one person who is communication giving information and another who is receiving information (e.g. Speaking & Listening). Therefore to be a good communicator you need to be a good listener.

Within activities communication can occur with anyone else involved:

        • Team mates
        • Coach
        • Opponents
        • Referee
        • Crowd?



Ways of Communicating

Communication can occur both verbally and non verbally - both types are very common during participation in sport

Verbal Communication is communication that occurs through talking. Information given in this way should follow the 6 C's. This means that any verbal information given should be:

      • Clear, Concise, Correct, Complete, Corteous, & Constructive


Non Verbal Communication is where information is given using methods other than talking. These methods include:

      • Facial Expressions (smiling, frowning nodding etc)
      • Hand gestures/signals
      • Body Language (posture)
      • Touching

A player in a team shouts for the ball when in space and uses hand gestures effectively to show where they want the ball played to.

  • The player in possession is made more aware when a team mate is in a good position and is ready to receive a pass. This makes it easier for the passing player to find a team mate in a good position to pass to. This makes it easier for the passing player to make a good decisions and reduces pressure as he is more aware of the effective passing options he has.

  • As the receiving player is demonstrating they want the ball this will increase the passing players confidence that they will perform effectively when they get the ball.

  • Due to knowing that the player is ready and knowing exactly where they want the pass to be played to, an accurate pass is more likely. Therefore reducing the risk of an error being made. This will further develop confidence and ensure the passing player commits fully to the pass.

  • This means the team is more likely to keep possession and advance the ball closer to the basket.

  • As the ball is played where the receiving player wants it they will find it easier to control. This will make it easier for the player to carry out their action more quickly. This will give the defence less time to react and give the attacking team a further advantage. For example the player may shoot before the defence can try to block the shot.

  • This will increase the chances of effective scoring opportunities being created and therefore increase the chances of points being scored.
